2018 Provincial Recap: Friday and Saturday

2018-08-11

Whitby and Toronto open the 2018 Provincials

The beginning to the 2018 OWBLL Provincials was full of surprises that left the final outcome for Sunday\'s playoffs until the final game on Saturday afternoon.

What a long strange trip it's been... or so sang the Grateful Dead so many decades ago, but it might apply to this crazy, up and down season.  The beginning to the 2018 OWBLL Provincials was full of surprises that left the final outcome for Sunday's playoffs until the final game on Saturday afternoon.

Old rivals Whitby Rush and Toronto Stars opened the provincials with nerves getting the better of the Stars as the Rush ran over them 5-0.  In the second game, Grand River continued their dominant ways with a convincing 8-1 victory over Arthur.  An uncharacteristic loss for the Aces who finished 4th in the regular season.  In the nightcap, Hamilton surprised and held on for a 2-1 win over Niagara.

The Saturday morning games saw Grand River squeeze by Hamilton 3-2.  Both the Niagara Turtle Islanders and Toronto Stars got their first points of the touranment, Niagara tying Whitby and Toronto pasting Arthur 7-2.  This set the stage for an intriguing afternoon.

Hamilton built up a 3-0 lead over Whitby only to succumb in the last minute in a 4-3 loss to Whitby.  Grand River and Toronto played to a 1-1 tie, giving Toronto a crucial point and a push into Sunday's playoff.  In the final game, Niagara surged past Arthur 4-1 eliminating both Hamilton and Arthur.

This sets up Sunday morning's semi-finals:  first place Grand River plays Toronto at 9 AM, Whitby and Niagara meet at 10.  The bronze medal game is at 1 PM with the final at 2.

All games are at Legends  Pad 1 in Oshawa and admission is free.
